How to get a Personnummer?

Here is a quick step-by-step of how you as a foreigner can get a Swedish personnummer:

Documents you need to apply:

  • A valid passport

  • Proof of residence in Sweden

  • A visa or residence permit (if applicable)

  • Possibly a job contract or proof of income if you are moving for work

How to apply for the personnummer:

  1. Register with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket)

  3. If everything is in order, the processing time is around 2-4 weeks and you will get your personnummer by mail or in person.

How to register for Public Healthcare in Sweden

If you are eligible to register for Public Healthcare, here is a quick step-by-step guide on how to do so:

  1. Get a residence permit (if it is required for your stay)

  2. Apply for Personnummer at Skatteverket (Swedish Tax Agency)

  3. Once you receive your Personnummer, you are automatically eligible for public healthcare

  4. Choose a Vårdcentral (local health center) Where you will see doctors for non-emergency care

  • Passport or Residence permit

  • Swedish Personal Number (Personnummer if available)

  • Proof of income or employment contract

  • Bank statement

  • Guarantor (Borgesman) which is required in some cases if you have no Swedish credit history

Can foreigners drive in Sweden?

  • Non-EU License is valid for 12 months after moving to Sweden, and after those 12 months you have to convert your license to a Swedish one or take a Swedish driving test

If you are a Non EU resident, here is a quick step by step guide on how you can obtain a Swedish drivers license:

  1. Apply for a Learners Permit (Körkortstillstånd)

    Submit a health declaration and eyes test

  2. Take the Risk Education Course (Riskutbildning 1 & 2)

    Risk 1: (Riskettan) which covers alcohol, drugs and fatigue awareness

    Risk 2: (Halkbana) where you drive in slippery road conditions

  3. Pass the Theory Test (Kunskapsprov)

  4. Take the Practical Driving Test

  5. After you pass both tests, you will receive your license within 2 weeks!!
